The 2024 forecast for upriver spring Chinook is 121,000 fish, fewer than the 141,179 that returned to the Columbia River in 2023, and lower than the 10-year average of 152,289 fish.

Spring Chinook fishing starts out on the Columbia River before fish move into the tributaries. We typically have a short season that closes after the first week of April. The season has has ongoing management based on conditions and fish counts, which allowed ODFW/WDFW to extend the season by adding additional retention days below Bonneville.

We will fish for Columbia spring chinook salmon in a variety of ways, in multiple places. We’ll cover water trolling Pro Troll 360s using both spinners and bait, and we’ll backtroll Kwikfish. Where we target spring Chinook salmon, and when, is based on water conditions, which can quickly change during the Spring months of March, April and May.
