Many visitors frequent Ensign Peak Nature Park for hiking and biking. It connects Ensign Peak to the Bonneville Shoreline Trail and is one of the most popular entryways into the valley foothills, making the area particularly vulnerable to erosion and trail widening.

This little peak is the perfect way to view the city. Just don't do it on the hottest day of the year because you'll hate it. Take a picnic and watch the sunset. Ensign Peak is at the north end of the Salt Lake Valley, above the State Capitol building.

The peak and surrounding area are part of Ensign Peak Nature Park, which is owned by the city. The hill's summit is accessed via a popular hiking trail, and provides an elevated view of Salt Lake Valley and Great Salt Lake.

Ensign Peak Park is nestled in the foothills north of downtown Salt Lake City. GPS is needed to find the trailhead, and street parking is readily available. The trail to the dedicatory pillar is uphill the whole hike, but is less than a mile. Bringing water on warm days is a must. There are explanatory markers along the way.

The trailhead is marked with a small park and reflection space and memorial to the emigres who didn’t survive the Mormon trek to Utah from Nauvoo, Illinois. The trail is gradual, moderately steep in spots and winds up the mountain offering views throughout. There is no shade on Ensign Peak so wear sunscreen and a hat.
