Appeared out of nowhere growing out of an established shrub a few weeks ago, and today in the patch of geraniums alongside. Been here 3 summers now and it’s the first time it’s come up. It’s nice!

Assuming it's sunny and well drained :-achillea (various colours available), agastache, alliums, anemone blanda, anthemis punctata, artemisia, asters, aubretia ...

Have to second Dove's suggestion about hardy geraniums, they are great. 'Rozanne', 'Anne Thompson' and 'Patricia' are just three that will start in late May and just keep going until the winter weather arrives.

Overwintering flower-buds quite often abort during severe weather ; owing to this years relatively mild Winter they've got through OK !

I have buddlea mixed with weigela. What I actually have beneath is hardy geraniums. They make a good weed-free ground cover, tolerate the conditions, are useful to the bees, and very pretty in season. I would have thought that plenty of other perennials would work too; maybe you have more choice if the small plants are beneath the sunny side.
