A compression fracture is a break in a vertebra (a bone in your spine). When broken, this bone collapses. These spinal fractures are common as you age, or they happen due to osteoporosis. Over time, vertebral fractures cause your spine to curve or collapse. Treatment includes rest, medications, braces and minimally invasive surgery.

Fractured vertebrae are usually caused by osteoporosis and traumas like falls, sports injuries or car accidents. Most spinal fractures won’t need surgery, but you might need to wear a brace for a few months. However, severe spinal fractures will need to be surgically repaired.

Compression fractures of the spine usually occur at the bottom part of the thoracic spine (T11 and T12) and the first vertebra of the lumbar spine (L1). Compression fractures of the spine generally occur from too much pressure on the vertebral body.

These compression fractures can occur in vertebrae anywhere in the spine, but they tend to occur most commonly in the upper back (thoracic spine), particularly in the lower vertebrae of that section of the spine (e.g. T10, T11, T12). They rarely occur above the T7 level of the spine.
