All Mac with thunderbolt 2 are limited since thunderbolt 2 doesn't embed USB C. Even with the thunderbolt 2 to thunderbolt 3 adapter, you could physically connect a USB C display like the ASUS MB169B or the LG 4K Display and they won't work. New Mac with USB C connectors will work and don't need the adapter.

2019年12月23日 · So, a quick summary. A single Thunderbolt/USB-C device can be connected with a mini-DP to USB-C adapter. A single USB 3.x/USB-C device can be connected by a USB-A to USB-C cable. This will not always get the most bandwidth a USB-C device can offer but it is cheap and easy. A Thunderbolt dock is an option, an expensive one that may be overkill.

Sorry for the confusion, Allan. I said it was a USB-C dock, which in all known cases, includes video. Regardless, any and all TB3 cables I tried won't send a video signal from the Mac to the USB-C dock. Also, when I connect the USB-C cable, the Mac makes makes a chime sound. Connecting the TB3 cable, no sound is made. –

2020年11月23日 · The Apple TB2 to TB3 adapter is bidirectional but it will only work on docks that are Thunderbolt. If there is an attached USB-C cable then it will not work with that Apple adapter. If the dock has any other than a USB-C/TB3 port on it then it will not work with that adapter. USB 3.x docks will not work.

It doesn't make sense to compare them, and in particular, it makes no sense to talk about the "speed" of USB Type-C, since the USB Type-C connector can be used for lots of things, including but not limited to 1.5 Mbps USB 2.0 and 40 Gbps Thunderbolt 4.
