The British Rail Class 08 is a class of diesel–electric shunting locomotives built by British Railways (BR). As the standard BR general-purpose diesel shunter, the class became a familiar sight at major stations and freight yards. Since their introduction in 1952, however, the nature of rail traffic in Britain has changed considerably.

A large number of Class 08 were obtained for Preservation by Heritage Railways. Many were also retained for use on Network Rail Lines, and these are shown with their normal location or storage.

The London Midland and Scottish Railway in partnership with English Electric designed the 350hp 0-6-0 shunting locomotive in the 1940s. A few of these earlier locomotives still survive including Class 1 12131 built at Darlington in 1952, at the North Norfolk Railway.

The Class 08 diesel shunters were eventually based on the LMS 1945 batch of diesel shunters that later became the Class 11s. The 996 Class 08 shunters were built over 10 years between 1952 and 1962 by the British Railway works at Crewe, Darlington, Derby, Doncaster and Horwich and could be seen at every station of any size.
