The Lockheed L-1011 TriStar (pronounced "El-ten-eleven") [1] is an American medium-to-long-range, wide-body trijet airliner built by the Lockheed Corporation. It was the third wide-body airliner to enter commercial operations, after the Boeing 747 and the McDonnell Douglas DC-10.

However, in looking at the potential airline market beyond American Airlines, a need for medium range aircraft with the ability to fly transcontinental and trans-Atlantic from the east coast was identified with other airlines, notably Eastern.

One interesting aspect of the L-1011 design was that it was capable of handling more passengers than the DC-10. The DC-10 had a maximum certified passenger capacity of 380 passengers, whereas the L-1011 TriStar was capable of seating up to 400.
