The 111 Squadron "Jaeger" was formed when the Republic of Singapore Air Force acquired four Grumman E-2C Hawkeye Airborne Early Warning aircraft in 1987. [1] Based at Tengah Air Base, its primary function is to perform airborne surveillance and early warning.

In March 2011, as the last remaining F3 Tornado squadron, and one of the premier fighter squadrons in the Royal Air Force, CXI (F) Sqn disbanded. The squadron spirit remains alive in the legacy that its members have created, through many years of outstanding front line service , and through the work of the CXI (F) Sqn Association.

Commanded by Major Shekleton and consisting of two Flight Commanders and a small group of pilots, 111 (F) Sqn was officially recognised on 1 August 1917, and a small-disused area of Deir-el-Belah airfield in Palestine became their home. The aircraft allocated to the Sqn included a Bristol Scout, two deHavilland DH2s and two Vickers FB 19s.

Unlike many other Hurricane units, 111 operated from Britain during the early months of World War Two although following the German invasion, it sometimes operated from France forward airfields. Having covered the Dunkirk evacuation, it took part in the Battle of Britain until early September 1940, when it was sent to Scotland to rest and re-equip.

The legacy of the Black Arrows lives on today with the Red Arrows taking part of their name from the legendary CXI(F) Squadron display team.
