Carbon-12 - Wikipedia
Carbon-12 is of particular importance in its use as the standard from which atomic masses of all nuclides are measured, thus, its atomic mass is exactly 12 daltons by definition. Carbon-12 is composed of 6 protons, 6 neutrons, and 6 electrons.
Carbon-12 - isotopic data and properties - ChemLin
The following table shows the atomic nuclei that are isotonic (same neutron number N = 6) and isobaric (same nucleon number A = 12) with Carbon-12. Naturally occurring isotopes are marked in green; light green = naturally occurring radionuclides.
We do not simply state that the mass of a C atom is 12 AMU because elements exist as a variety of isotopes. Carbon exists as two major isotopes, 12 C, and 13 C ( 14 C exists and has

Carbon-12 - Simple English Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Carbon-12 (also written 12 C) is an isotope of carbon. It is the most common isotope of carbon, as 98.89% of all carbon is this type of carbon. It is one of two stable (non- radioactive) isotopes of carbon. The other is carbon-13. Carbon-12 is important in chemistry as it is the benchmark from which all other relative atomic masses are worked out.
Atomic/Molar mass - Westfield State University
Atomic mass is based on a relative scale and the mass of 12 C (carbon twelve) is defined as 12 amu. Why do we specify 12 C? We do not simply state the the mass of a C atom is 12 amu because elements exist as a variety of isotopes.
