However I noticed amazon sells many of these adapters which instruct you to plug in the separate ground wire to an existing ground slot on a normal 5-15 outlet.

2022年10月31日 · EV charging is new, and if you already have an existing suitable receptacle (e.g., a 14-30 for a clothes dryer) then the natural thing to do is save money by reusing the receptacle. That makes some sense, but if the receptacle is going to be switched back and forth (e.g., between clothes dryer and EV charger) then it actually can lead to problems.

2022年3月18日 · That's the purpose of the newer 14-30 - adding a ground to the 10-30 that didn't have one. That is exactly right. If one wanted a socket with no neutral, for a compressor, welder, EV charger and the like, the NEMA 6-30 is the socket for that. However, 10-30's neutral doesn't double as a ground at all.

2017年3月25日 · Yes, you wired the NEMA 14-30 receptacle correctly. That receptacle has two hot connections, each 120V but on different phases, resulting in a 240V potential. So if you take a voltage tester you will find it reads 240V between the two rectangular slots on the outlet, and 120V between either rectangle and the neutral or ground.

Consider instead a 5-30 (120v), 6-30 (240v), or 10-30 (unsafe 120/240). 14-30 is the safe 120/240 outlet with separate neutral and ground (required by code in most jurisdictions) 10-30 is its older counterpart that combines ground and neutral. Or consider running another conductor (white) for Neutral. Then you may have the 14-30 which you desire.
