An arquebus (/ ˈɑːrk (w) əbəs / AR-k (w)ə-bəs) is a form of long gun that appeared in Europe and the Ottoman Empire during the 15th century. An infantryman armed with an arquebus is called an arquebusier.

The first recorded fatal accident involving a gun in England is recorded at Welton, East Riding of Yorkshire.

The arquebus was an early type of firearm used in the 15th to 17th centuries, characterized by a matchlock mechanism that ignited gunpowder to fire a projectile. This weapon marked a significant shift in military technology, influencing warfare and the tactics employed by armies during the transitional age of gunpowder and nomadic influences.

I'm a reenactor, but I don't handle firearms (or artillery). what does it feel like to use one -- is there significant recoil and a large quantity of smoke? do you need to be perfectly static to fire it?
