In 1592 Plancius published his best known world map, titled "Nova et exacta Terrarum Orbis Tabula geographica ac hydrographica". Only one remaining copy is known to exist, preserved at the Colegio del Corpus Christi in Valencia, Spain.

"Similar maps of this two-hemisphere type, with elaborate pictorial borders inspired by Théodore de Bry's collection of travelers' tales, were popular for a century or more after Plancius introduced his 1594 map. It in turn was based on Mercator's two-hemisphere world map of 1587.

The Plancius world map of 1594 is best known for being the first map to employ a decorative border filled with allegorical female figures and vignettes of flora and fauna believed to be indigenous to their representative continent.

The 1594 double hemisphere world map by Petrus Plancius is a historic map that depicts the world as it was known during the late sixteenth century. The map is divided into two hemispheres, with the western hemisphere on the left and the eastern hemisphere on the right.

Rarity: The hemispheres in this map are based on an earlier world map (1590) that was in a Bible edited by Plancius. That state was also released in 1592, and in other bibles in 1612 and 1621. The 1594 map was originally released separately and then later became part of Linschoten's Itinerarium (1599).
