Although William & Mary accepted the English crown in 1688 after the abdication of James II on January 11th, no coins were issued in their names until 1689. They were proclaimed joint rulers of Great Britain on February 13th, but were not recognised by Scotland until their coronation on April 11th, and not by Ireland until the next year.

The half crown was a British coin which was valued at "2/6" (two shilling and sixpence) – 12½ pence in modern currency. It was literally half the value of the Crown. Half crowns were first issued around 1549 in gold or silver.
