The FV4005 project came about in the late 1940s as a British attempt to build the longest range and most powerful gun possible to defeat a new generation of Soviet heavy tanks. The 183mm calibre L4A1 is the biggest gun ever fitted to a tank.

2023年11月16日 · The gun was named the L4A1, and the calibre settled on was 183mm, or 7.2”. It would fire High Explosive Squash Head (HESH) ammunition. This ammunition was incredibly large and heavy and had to be loaded as a separate projectile and case. The projectile weighed 145lb (65.8kg) and was 29 ¾” (76cm) long.

2023年5月18日 · This new tank gun was named the Ordnance, Quick-Firing, 183 mm, Tank, L4 Gun and was to fire the L1 183mm HESH round weighing in at just under of 200 lbs. No armor-piercing or high-explosive anti-tank rounds were made for this gun, it was to fire HESH only. The FV215 came in at 61 tons and was a big, heavily armored vehicle.
