From 1920 to 1925, the Ordnance Department modified the M1897 gun by placing it on a new carriage designed to address the shortcomings of the box trail carriage that included limited traverse, limited elevation, and limited range. The new weapon was standardized in 1926 as the "75 mm gun M1 on carriage M2A1."

The French 75 mm field gun is a quick-firing field artillery piece adopted in March 1898. Its official French designation was: Matériel de 75 mm Mle 1897. It was commonly known as the French 75, simply the 75 and Soixante-Quinze (French for "seventy-five").

One of the main versions was the M1897A4 which remained in service right up to the start of WW2, but by 1941 it had given way to the more modern and heavier 105mm Howitzer as the standard weapon of the Field Artillery Regiments, some were mounted on the M3 Half-Track and used as Self-Propelled Guns.

From 1914 to 1918, the 75 mm 1897 model field gun was the French army's most important weapon. The "75" was the first piece of artillery to compensate for recoil on firing. It was accurate and mobile and had a rapid firing rate. It was an unprecedented technological achievement.
