IC 1101 is a class S0 supergiant (cD) lenticular galaxy at the center of the Abell 2029 galaxy cluster. It has an isophotal diameter at about 123.65 to 169.61 kiloparsecs (400,000 to 550,000 light-years).

IC 1101 is the largest known Elliptical Galaxy type, for that matter, that we have so far discovered in the Universe. In addition to it being the largest galaxy, it also has the largest supermassive black hole in any galaxy so far spotted.

IC 1101 is a supergiant elliptical (E) to lenticular (S0) type galaxy. It has the biggest core discovered in any galaxy with a size of around 14000 light-years. The core of IC 1101 has one of the largest Black Holes. It has almost 1000 times more stars than our galaxy Milky Way has.

IC 1101 was first discovered by William Herschel, in 1870 or so. It was first thought to be just a nebula. Everybody believed that until Hubble came in the 1920s and proved, with his new classification of galaxies, that IC 1101 is a galaxy: a big one actually.
