Although 23 years had passed between the end of the Second World War and the first delivery of the class R42 cars, these cars were nevertheless a part of the almost continuous delivery of cars for the system, and followed the same basic principles of the R10 cars of 1948.
The R-42 was featured in the famous car versus subway chase scene in the 1971 movie, The French Connection. The two cars that appeared in the film—#4572 and #4573—are the very same ones that can be found on the platform at the New York Transit Museum.
