California Vehicle Code 22107 VC is the State’s statute prohibiting unsafe lane changes. Under PC 22107, drivers can only change lanes when safe and only after signaling.

California Vehicle Code Section 22107 applies in two situations: when you change lanes or when you steer your vehicle away from the center line you’re traveling. An example of the latter would be if there was some fallen debris in the roadway and you needed to dodge it.

A lane change is unsafe if it endangers other vehicles or disrupts traffic. This includes failing to check blind spots, merging without enough space, or weaving between lanes.
