26708 CVC – California “Window Tinting” Laws - Shouse Law Group
Vehicle Code 26708 CVC is the California statute that makes it illegal for you to engage in “window tinting.” This means either placing a material or object: directly in the windshield of a car, or its side or rear window; or, anywhere else in the car if it obstructs your (the driver's) view.

(a) No person shall place, install, affix, or apply any transparent material upon the windshield, or side or rear windows, of any motor vehicle if the material alters the color or reduces the light transmittance of the windshield or side or rear windows, except as provided in subdivision (b), (c), or (d) of Section 26708.
