Responsible for all flight line, back shop and ammunition maintenance in support of the 27th Special Operations group mission, the 27 SOMXG conducts quality maintenance for five different types of aircraft across four squadrons, seven defense contractor groups and 1,400 Air Commando maintainers.

The 27th Special Operations Maintenance Squadron (SOMXS), known as the Phantoms, is a vital part of the 27th Special Operations Wing at Cannon AFB, New Mexico.

The 27 SOMSG traces its beginnings to the 27th Air Base Group, which activated August 1, 1948, at Kearney Army Air Field, Nebraska. The group supported the wing mission of flying the F-82 aircraft.
