The vvti engines have been proven to produce more power at lower RPMS, however the trade off is that parts for them (cams for one) are much more expensive and rare. As for them being cheaper it just depends where you go.

2009年1月6日 · The VVTi 2JZGTE rods are the exact same size as the non-vvti units. Also the crank is exactly the same and so are the pistons and everything else in the bottom end. Below I have listed all the parts and they are exactly the same, they have been confirmed in the EPC (Toyota Electronic Parts Catalog) Pics are also shown below in the end of the post.

2012年1月23日 · Beyond that it hits a wall with modification, though, as there's much less aftermarket and it's much more complicated to go standalone or beef up the fuel system vs the non-vvti 1JZ-GTE. If you'd truly be happy with ~325-340whp forever, the VVTi is great, but beyond that it's all about the earlier ones.

2014年7月19日 · Not a lot of US companies make cams for the JDM VVTI 2JZ-GTE, you'll have to search HKS, Tomei, etc but as far as I know, the exhaust cam is the same and only the VVTI cam is different so if you already have cams, you should only need an upgraded VVTI cam if you plan on installing cams, pairing with your old upgraded exhaust cam shaft.
