These locomotives were designed for light passenger work. Sixty-five engines were built at Darlington and they were the smallest engines in the BR range of standard types. They were similar in design to the 46400 LMS Ivatt class of 1946.

The London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) Ivatt Class 2 2-6-0 is a class of steam locomotive designed for light mixed traffic. Elderly 0-6-0s formed the backbone of the low-powered locomotives within the LMS fleet.

One such was the Ivatt 2MT (see No.46521) a state of the art small locomotive introduced in the immediate post war era in accordance with latest design techniques. The first Ivatt 2MT appeared from Derby in 1946 and the last emerged from Swindon in March 1953.

This month, we examine two finished samples of the highly anticipated BR Standard Class 2MT locomotive and give you a sneak peek of the Class P2 locomotives in production. 2011年5月16日 · This class of steam locomotive was designed by H.G.Ivatt for the London Midland & Scottish Railway. Construction of the type began 1946. The railways were nationalised in 1948 and the modern Ivatt 2MT was deemed suitable for continued construction.

Great Central Railway: Ex British Railways BR standard class 2MT 2-6-0 78018 (built at Darlington Works in 1954 to a BR standard design by Robert Riddles). 2MT 78018 was designed to haul light freight trains and light branch line passenger trains (mixed traffic class).

In 1946 the Chief Mechanical Engineer of the LMS, George (H. G.) Ivatt produced a modern and lightweight 'mixed traffic' 2-6-0 tender locomotive design known as the '2MT'. It was intended for working all kinds of traffic on branch lines which required light axle loads.
