Union Pacific 3985 is a four-cylinder articulated 4-6-6-4 "Challenger"-type steam locomotive built in July 1943 by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) of Schenectady, New York, for the Union Pacific Railroad. No. 3985 is one of only two Challengers still in existence and the only one to have operated in excursion service.

Union Pacific Challenger No. 3985 was designed by Union Pacific and built in 1943 by the American Locomotive Company. It is one of 105 Challengers built for Union Pacific between 1936 and 1943 and was, for many years, the only operating engine of its class in the world – the largest and most powerful operating steam locomotive.

Union Pacific 's articulated 4-6-6-4 Challenger steam locomotive #3985 came to Portland, Oregon, on September 26, 1995. Its cars were left at Union Station while it was serviced and displayed across the river at Albina Yard.

Union Pacific (UP) #3985 was one of 105 4-6-6-4 Challenger type locomotives owned and operated UP. Classified as a 4664-4 by the railroad, the locomotive was built by the American Locomotive Company in July 1943 with builder’s number 70174.

2015年4月13日 · On this rare occasion, Union Pacific’s #3985 4-6-6-4 Challenger steam locomotive is hauling a mainline freight consisting of 143 cars while hi balling up the Archer Hill grade east of Cheyenne, Wyoming. Using all of her 97,350 lbf of tractive effort, she can maintain 35 mph on this 2.8 mile grade!

Included in the donation consist are the No. 3985 “Challenger” steam locomotive, the No. 5511, a 2-10-2 steam locomotive and the “Centennial” diesel locomotive. The No. 3985 is one of just two remaining engines of its kind in the world, with the second on static display in North Platte, NE.

Union Pacific 3985 is a lost Challenger-type Engine. 3985 was built in 1943 as part of the fourth batch of 4-6-6-4s for the Union Pacific Railroad. The engine later stopped pulling revenue trains in 1957.
