3rd SFG (A) History. The 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne) was first activated on Dec. 5, 1963 at Fort Bragg, N.C., as a Special Action Force with a Middle East and Africa orientation. Until its deactivation on Dec. 10, 1969, the Group trained armed forces personnel of the Congo, and also supported the Gemini 6 and 7 manned space launches.
