The ES44C4 (Evolution Series, 4,400 hp, C to denote 3 axles per truck, 4 traction motors) was introduced in 2009. While similar to the ES44AC, the ES44C4 has two traction motors per truck, instead of the conventional three such as on the ES44AC.

BNSF has purchased thousands of the emissions-friendly GEVO series, in several different models– both DC and AC traction, and the interesting ES44C4 and ET44C4 versions with only four powered axles in an A-1-A A-1-A arrangement.

Split-cooling was standard. No four axle freight versions produced. These feature the same carbody design and many of the internal components as the Dash-9 series, except they are equipped with AC traction motors instead of the conventional DC versions.

For the EPA Tier 2 emissions standard, GE developed the new Evolution Series engine, also known as “GEVO”. By far the most successful variant, with almost 3,900 locomotives sold, is the ES44AC, the successor to the AC4400CW with three-phase traction motors.

The C4 is a variant of the ES44AC, using an A1A-A1A wheel arrangement with an idler axle in the center of each truck vs. the all-wheel power of its ES44AC brethren.
