The 401st led the combat wing on what has been termed Òthe greatest air battle of WW IIÓ. The Group encountered fierce enemy aircraft resistance, in which it was supported by Colonel James Howard, a P-51 pilot, who single-handedly fought off 30 Nazi fighters, destroying four, and for which he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.

The 401st Bomb Group flew B-17 Flying Fortresses from Deenethorpe, Northamptonshire, from November 1943 to June 1945. Starting their missions at that time meant the focus was very much on the coming invasion attempt of France planned for the following summer. The Group won two Distinguished Unit Citations.

The 401st Air Expeditionary Group is a provisional United States Air Force unit assigned to United States Air Forces in Europe to be activated or inactivated at any time as needed. It is stationed at Ramstein Air Base, Germany. The group was first activated as the 401st Bombardment Group during World War II.

The 401st BG operated chiefly against strategic targets: submarine facilities bombing industries marshalling yards missile sites shipyards and airfields. Beginning in October 1944 , they were more concentrated on oil reserves.

(Vic) Maslen devoted literally thousands of hours prior to his retirement and all of his free time after retirement into researching and compiling the records of the 401st Bomb Group in World War II.
