The HK416 therefore has a reliable firing pin or drop safety, is matched to NATO ammunition types and passes the NATO barrel obstruction test according to AC225/D14. The weapon can be set to safe in the cocked or decocked state at any time.

The HK416 was one of the weapons displayed to U.S. Army officials during an invitation-only Industry Day on 13 November 2008. The goal of the Industry Day was to review current carbine technology prior to writing formal requirements for a future replacement for the M4 carbine.
