49395 was built at Crewe in June 1921, at a cost of £8,900, as LNWR number 485. Later it became LMS number 9395 before becoming 49395 under BR. In 1928 it was fitted with a Belpaire boiler. It ran with a LYR 8-wheel tender for a period during the 1930s. BR motive power depot allocations since 1948.

Uniquely amongst classes of LNWR 8-coupled tender engines, they were not rebuilt from or into other classes. They were classified by the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) as 5, from 1928 7F.

The LNWR used a lowest available number numbering system, meaning that numbers were somewhat haphazard. After the grouping in 1923, the LMS renumbered the G2 class 9395-9454 in order of build date. All were inherited by British Railways upon nationalisation in 1948. BR added 40000 to their numbers so that they became 49395-49454. Number in Service.

This was to replace that one-piece LMS/BR thing which it had on withdrawal. An LNW chimney would certainly improve its appearance, and many of the 0-8-0s still had them in BR days.
