SRM is a scale for measuring the color intensity of a beer (it's more technical than this, but we will leave it there). SRM was adopted by the Ameican Society of Brewing Chemists in 1951. There is another, older scale named degrees Lovibond (devised by Joseph Williams Lovibond) that the SRM scale has replaced.

MCU provides a good estimate of SRM color for light beers, but becomes less accurate as beer color exceeds 6-8 SRM. To get a more accurate estimate that will stay consistent for light beer and darker beers use the Morey equation:

Determination of the SRM value involves measuring the attenuation of light of a particular wavelength (430 nm) in passing through 1 cm of the beer, expressing the attenuation as an absorption and scaling the absorption by a constant (12.7 for SRM; 25 for EBC). The SRM (or EBC) number represents a single point in the absorption spectrum of beer.
