The 506th Heavy Panzer Battalion (German: schwere Panzerabteilung 506; abbreviated: "s.Pz.Abt. 506") was a German heavy Panzer Abteilung (independent battalion-sized unit) equipped with Tiger I tanks until 28 July 1944.

2024年12月13日 · First up is this well known s.Pz.Abt.506 Tiger II, knocked out near Freialdenhoven, Germany, apparently on 20 November 1944. Note it had chicken wire to secure foliage along the side of the hull. This detail appears on other Tiger II's of this unit. Its tactical number has not been confirmed:

2025年3月17日 · "Hummel" (now 4th company, sPzAbt 506) was equipped with Tiger I's. This new company was fully integrated by early December 1944. The only Heer Tiger battalion to take part in the Ardennes offensive was sPzAbt 506. It took part in the defense of Germany and finally surrendered to US forces in the Ruhr pocket on April of 1945.

During WWII, German Tiger tanks were primarily organized into special schwere Panzer Abteilung (roughly "heavy tank battalions"). Ten Wehrmacht and three Waffen-SS schwere Panzer Abteilung were formed. Formed May 1942. Sent to North Africa with Tiger I and Panzer III tanks in late 1942 and early 1943. Surrendered with the German defeat in Tunisia.

September 1944 the 506 transferred to west of Arnhem and played a key role in the failed Allied Operation Market Garden attempt to capture a bridge across the Rhine.

2005年1月2日 · So far as I know, only two outfits equipped with the Tiger I fought in the Battle of the Bulge--schwere Panzer Kompanie "Hummel", which served as a 4th company for the King Tiger-equipped schwere Panzer Abteilung 506; and schwere Panzer Abteilung (Funklenk) 301.
