The 56th Training Squadron trains almost half of the United States Air Force's new fighter pilots each year. It provides academic and ground training for pilots transitioning into the General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon at Luke Air Force Base, and at the Papago Park military reservation in Phoenix, Arizona.

The 56th Operations Group has operational control and responsibility for the entire fighter-training mission at Luke and supports F-15C fighter pilot training for the 173d Fighter Wing, Kingsley Field OR, and F-16 pilot training at the 162nd Fighter Wing, Tucson Air National Guard Base AZ.

The 56th Maintenance Group provides aircraft maintenance on 33 F-16 and 123 F-35 Joint Strike Fighter aircraft. The group plays a pivotal role in conducting safe training for 405 pilots, by generating more than 30,000 sorties and 37,000 flight hours each year.
