During the Vietnam War, Pacific Air Forces constituted and activated the 56th Armament and Electronics Maintenance Squadron on 16 March 1967. The squadron was organized on 8 April 1967 at Nakhon Phanom Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand and was assigned to the 56th Air Commando (later, 56th Special Operations) Wing.
