Although only in existence for 22 months, 630 Squadron had earned its place in the history of the RAF. Seventy members of the Squadron won gallantry awards, but at a terrible cost - 59 Lancasters had been lost in action (and another 11 had crashed).

Formed from ‘B’ Flight of 57 Squadron in November 1943, 630 Squadron operated the Lancaster from RAF East Kirkby until it was disbanded in July 1945. Artefacts appear in amazing places. Perhaps none more so than the Distinguished Flying Medal that was awarded to Sergeant Richard Stafford Parle of 630 Squadron on 22 March 1944.

A search mission followed by 6 aircraft of 630 Squadron supported by 2 Warwicks, 1 Walrus and a Hight Speed Launch of 16 Group, but no trace could be found and no wreckage was seen floating. That evening a search mission was planned for early the following morning with 13 aircraft of 57 Squadron flying.
