A Volunteer Gliding Squadron (VGS) is an aircraft squadron of the Royal Air Force (RAF) which provides flying training in glider aircraft for Royal Air Force Air Cadets.

2023年7月18日 · Originally based at RAF Burtonwood, 635 VGS operated the type from BAe Samlesbury in Lancashire, before moving to RAF Topcliffe in 2008. Following the retirement from VGS Operations, the type was then converted into the Grob 109 Able. The Grob 109B was a two seat motor glider that was used by the Royal Air Force to train Air Cadets to fly.

Gliding Scholarship (GS) - is an 8 hour course to flying either aircraft types solo. An additional 2 hours can be awarded to achieve the course aim. Trainees attain the aircrew training standard GS. Two sets of Wings can be awarded to Air Cadets; Blue for completing the GS Syllabus to the required ATS, and Silver for flying a solo circuit.

Early in 2009 635 VGS Samlesbury found themselves homeless and moved in to RAF Topcliffe as a temporary measure and once again Topcliffe skies were busy with up to seven Vigilants. It was in May 2009 that the Squadron saw another major change in executive staff positions.
