I am Squadron Leader Chris Fleming the Commanding Officer of 645 Volunteer Gliding Squadron, based at RAF Topcliffe, North Yorkshire. We are all volunteers who provide basic flying training in the Grob Viking Glider, to young people in the Air Training Corps and Combined Cadet Force.

I joined 645 VGS in the early 70s and had a great time flying the Mk3 and Sedburgh gliders at RAF Catterick. I progressed to becoming an instructor and handed in my uniform to become a CI before leaving in 1977 to join the RAF. I served 34 yrs, predominantly in the SAR role as a Wessex Nav and latterly as Flt Cdr at ARCC Kinloss.
