The 69th Infantry Regiment is an infantry regiment of the United States Army. It is from New York City, part of the New York Army National Guard. It is known as the "Fighting Sixty-Ninth", [1] a name said to have been given by Robert E. Lee during the Civil War.

The 69th, the 1st regiment of the Irish brigade, was the outgrowth of the 69th militia (q. v.) and contained members from New York city, Chicago, Il1., Brooklyn and Buffalo. It was mustered into the U. S. service at New York city Sept. 7 to Nov. 17, 1861, for three years, and left for Washington on Nov. 18.

The 69th Regiment, located in New York city and still in existence, was organized October 12, 1851. In 1858 it was reorganized as an artillery regiment, doing duty as infantry. The regiment has rendered the State service during the Quarantine riots in 1858, the Draft riots, 1863, and the Quarantine disturbances in 1892.
