Yosemite Decimal System(YDS) is a grading system commonly found in the United States, starting with a 5. something Grades 1 to 4 refer to walks of increasing difficulty, by the time you reach 5 you are assumed to be scrambling over rocks which equates to about 5.0.

2024年4月29日 · Like the French system, the YDS uses letters above 5.9 to create increments between full number grades. The only difference being that YDS usually uses a-d without ‘+’ increments instead of a-c. As shown above, this gives the French system 6 increments per number grade, while allowing 4 increments per number grade in the YDS.

What generally tends to happen with grades across the world is that routes are graded in the style that they are usually climbed. So for easier routes below about 6b+ the grade is almost invariably an on-sight grade. For routes above about 7b it is almost always given a redpoint grade.

Coming from our frustrations of always trying to figure out what grading systems are used in which country and what do they mean in your own system, we have created this simple but hopefully helpfull comparison table. Please remember that grading a route is very subjective to the location and the person giving the grade.

Aspects such as danger or endurance are not included in the evaluation meaning that a route with one 6b move and twenty 5b moves would get the same grade as a route with twenty 6b moves in a row. The grade originally comes from the Fontainebleau Bouldering Grade and therefore is presented in a very similar fashion i.e. one number and one letter.
