It is used in the power-output stages of audio amplifiers, most commonly now in guitar amplifiers, but originally in radios. The EL84 is smaller and more sensitive than the octal 6V6 that was widely used around the world until the 1960s. An interchangeable North American type is the 6BQ5 (the RETMA tube designation name for the EL84).

The pairing is quite magical, and the original Dynaco ultralinear output transformers have the damping factor for the Quads.

2010年4月3日 · If you want to start simple and inexpensive with a 6BQ5, the RH84 is a good one for little money. I built one here using cheap console output transformers and simple SS rectification and it worked nicely (until I stole the 6BQ5s for another project). There are tons of circuits around for the 6BQ5 (English name is EL84, Russian equivalent is 6P14).

2009年9月13日 · As the 6BQ5 is a very easy tube to drive, almost any preamp tube can be used at low gain to achieve desired goals. As it sits, My computer sound card does not have enough output to drive this amplifier to clipping before the sound card clips.

The 6BQ5 is another designation for the Mullard designed output pentode EL84. The thin glass tube envelope is 72 mm long excluding the B9A base pins and the diameter is 20 mm. References: Data-sheet, 3002 & 1040 .
