2023年12月12日 · Number 6 Flying Training School has welcomed Group Captain Barker as its’ new Commandant. 6FTS Headquarters based at RAF Cranwell is responsible for the 15 University Air Squadrons whose mission, is to attract talent to Regular and Reserve Service by educating undergraduates on the role of Air & Space Power in delivering the nation’s defence.

Returning to the UK, Air Cdre Edwards took command of No 6FTS delivering the RAF’s 15 University Air Squadrons and Air Cadet Air Experience Flying. This was followed by a tour as Typhoon Dep Force Commander from which he was promoted to Air Cdre and became the Combat Air Force Commander in Jan 2023.

A new Unit formed to train RAF navigators was formed on 1st May 1970 at RAF Finningley, and it took on the 6FTS nameplate. It was equipped with Jet Provost T.3 and T.4 aircraft and also later received some T.5s.

RAF Spitalgate-based Nos 15 and 37 Training School merged on 15 Aug 1918 to form 39 Training Depot Station. This renamed to 39 Training school on 14 Mar 1919 and again on 26 Apr 1920 to become 6 Flying Training School.
