It succeeds the Boeing 737 Next Generation (NG), Boeing 737 Classic (737-300, 737-400, 737-500), and Boeing 737 Original (737-100 and 737-200). It competes with the Airbus A320neo family.

The wing of today's Next-Generation 737 is a new design compared to the 737 Classic, with greater area for more lift and an advanced geometry to reduce drag. Simpler control surfaces reduce weight and maintenance requirements.
