The Boeing 747SP (for Special Performance) is a shortened version of the Boeing 747 wide-body airliner, designed for a longer range. It is the highest flying subsonic passenger airliner, with a service ceiling of 45,100 feet (13,700 m).

One of their major routes was from Seoul to New York. This route could not be flown non-stop by their existing fleet of 747-200s as they required a refuelling stop at Anchorage. The 747SPs would allow the airline to bypass Anchorage completely. Korean Air Lines placed an order with Boeing for two 747SPs on April 10, 1979.

2006年9月10日 · On November 12, 1975, Boeing decided to showcase that performance, and flew the fourth 747SP (c/n: 21025) non-stop from New York to Tokyo (a distance of 6,927 miles) with 200 passengers on board in 13 hours, 33 minutes, setting a new world record. After landing, the aircraft still had over 30,000 pounds of fuel remaining!

It can fit 230 passengers in a three-class cabin (first class, business, economy) and 331 passengers in a two-class cabin (303 passengers in economy, 28 in business). Powered by four Pratt & Whitney JT9D, the aircraft has a maximum thrust of 48,750 lbf each engine.
