The Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway (S&DJR) 7F 2-8-0 is a class of steam locomotive designed for hauling heavy coal and goods trains. Eleven were built in two batches in 1914 and 1925, and were used until withdrawal between 1959 and 1964.

On 20 November 1929, the driver and fireman of a northbound goods train were overcome by smoke. The train was moving very slowly in the tunnel due to a heavy load and due to starting from a standstill at Midford. The locomotive, S&DJR 2-8-0 89, plodded on and eventually breasted the summit of the gradient.

In 1930, the LMS took the S&DJR locos into its own stock and the 2-8-0s became Nos. 9670-80. The Ramsbottom safety valves on the original batch were replaced by Ross Pop valves, the screw couplings and long buffer spindles were restored and the helmet-shaped covers to the boiler washout plugs on the firebox were removed.

53808 - SDJR No. 88 7F - Watercress Line
SDJR 7F 2-8-0, No. 88 was built in 1925 at the Darlington locomotive works of Robert Stephenson & Co. and is one of only two that survive from the original 11 constructed. It now carries its BR number, 53808. It arrived at Woodham Brothers yard in 1964 and moved to the S&DRT base at the then Radstock depot.

At the Annual General Meeting in 1968, a proposal was put that the Circle should investigate the possibilities of preserving one of two remaining Somerset & Dorset 7F class 2-8-0 freight engines lying in Woodham’s scrapyard at Barry in South Wales; and of setting up a museum in a former S&D station building.
