The Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway (S&DJR) 7F 2-8-0 is a class of steam locomotive designed for hauling heavy coal and goods trains. Eleven were built in two batches in 1914 and 1925, and were used until withdrawal between 1959 and 1964.

7F built for SDJR in 1914 Midland Compound introduced in 1905 was used for the boiler design for the 7F for the SDJR. In 1876 the Midland Railway (MR) and the London & South Western Railway combined forces to rescue the financially ailing Somerset & Dorset Railway.

The Radstock rail accident took place on the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway in south west England, on 7 August 1876. Two trains collided on a single track section, resulting in fifteen passengers being killed. It was difficult to assign blame to any individual for the crash.

Beames introduced the G2 class in 1921-1922. These were fitted with 175psi boilers and were classified 7F. Many G1 engines were rebuilt with these higher pressure boilers from 1936 onwards and became known as the G2A class.

Built in 1925 as S&D No.88 and withdrawn in 1964, our 7F locomotive No. 53808 was returned to steam after a 17-year long restoration in 1987.
