It is the shortest commonly run middle-distance running event. The 800 metres is run over two laps of an outdoor (400-metre) track and has been an Olympic event since the first modern games in 1896. During the winter track season the event is usually run by completing four laps of an indoor 200-metre track.

Example of how the IAAF scoring table works: A women's 800m result of 2:09.56 minutes is equal to 997 points, whereas a men's 800m result totalling 997 points is eqaul to a 1:51.03 minute run. If an athlete runs slower than these times, they will recieve a lower amount of points and vice versa if they run faster.
