2020年5月22日 · The 80486 contains parallel operating stages for decoding, operand fetch, execution and write back. So while an ADD reg,reg does take 3 clocks to perform, as it did in the original 8086, its execution overlaps with the previous/next operation, so the CPU can crank out one ADD reg,reg per clock.
How did AMD's 386 and 486 perform like Intel's newer generation?
2020年12月15日 · AMD countered Intel by shipping the popular (at least with PC enthusiasts) Am386-40, which many have claimed performed as well as the Intel 80486-25 at a lower price point. I don't know if AMD itself marketed the Am386 as comparable to the Intel 80486, but they definitely did market their 80486 "clones" as comparable to Intel's Pentium.

2019年6月7日 · The sheer size of a more than 100 times bigger cache made Motorola's effort seem useless in comparison (*9). Intel kept the single cache for the 80486 (1989) but now integrated 8 KiB of cache right onto the CPU - which didn't stop mainboard manufacturers from adding external caches, now in the region of 256 KiB to 1 MiB.

I have had great success with Gentoo Linux on the earliest generation of Intel 80486 processors, though I had to patch it (below). It works on the later ones too (486DX2 and 486DX4, both clock multiplied and having the back-ported Pentium CPUID instruction). I have it working on a Compaq LTE Elite 4/75CX laptop with a whopping 24MiB of memory.
