The Battle of Graz took place on 24–26 June 1809 between an Austrian corps commanded by Ignaz Gyulai and a French division led by Jean-Baptiste Broussier. The French were soon reinforced by a corps under Auguste Marmont.

In 1809 at Aspern-Essling the 24th Light's in brilliant bayonet charge overran Austrian battery. The French took 700 prisoners and recaptured the church. Soon however the Austrian Beniovski Infantry Regiment counterattacked and retook the church.

The 84th Ligne, in tribute to the victory over 10,000 Austrians at Graz in 1809, had a silver plaque attached to the staff of its eagle with the inscription "Un Contra Dix" ("One Against Ten"). In 1809 at Wagram this regiment was part of the famous MacDonald's column.
