The Norinco Type 89 tracked armoured fighting vehicle is a Chinese armoured personnel carrier. It was developed from the earlier export market Type 85 AFV vehicle. It entered service in the late 1990s and was first shown publicly in 1999. There are approximately 1,000 in service.

The basic armored personnel carrier (APC), designated Type YW531H, mounted a standard-issue Type 14 12.7 mm heavy machine gun which fires AP/incendiary rounds. The ammunition provision 1120 rounds.

The ZSD-89A is an improved Type 89 Armored Personnel Carrier armed with a 12.7mm heavy machine gun. Just over 400 of the type are available to the service and these are used in several other battlefield roles including MEDEVAC.

The Chinese ZSD89 Armoured Personnel Carrier development started in the early 1980s by Chinese company Norinco as the replacement for the Type 63 APC. After evaluation, development and testing, the ZSD89 finally entered production in July 1990.

Type 89A Electro-Optical Reconnaissance Vehicle – Fitted with electro-optical sensors and radars for battlefield surveillance missions. The vehicle features CS/LK5, a remote weapon station mounting QJC-88 for self-defense purposes.

China's Type 85a/89a APC was initially for export as a basic model. It was developed by adding a more powerful German engine on the chassis taken from a Type 63 APC.

You can tell if an armored vehicle is based on the ZSD-89A or ZBD-04 chassis based on the different rake in the front upper armor and the wavy pattern of the side skirts.
