The Wieger StG-940 was an East German series of assault rifles loosely based upon the Kalashnikov AK-74. [1] The weapon was intended for export. The brand name is a portmanteau of the words Wiesa (town of manufacture) and Germany. [2]

Based on the famous Kalashnikov AK-74 rifle, it was designed in East Germany under Soviet license starting in 1981. The new rifle family was intended to adapt to 5.56×45 NATO ammunition, a smaller caliber than the usual Russian 7.62×39 M43 intermediate round. First prototypes were tested in 1985, and rifles were ready for manufacture in 1988.

2010年5月20日 · In an attempt to generate cash for imports Wieger developed an AK-clone chambered in 5.56mm NATO. It was apparently very reliable. The collapse of the wall saw the demise of the company which found itself in direct competition with West Germany’s H&K.
