Additional testing in the form of Magnetic Particle Inspection for Longitudinal Discontinuities and Transverse Cracks is a requirement of the A490 specification. Medium carbon and alloy steel. Withdrawn in 2002.

ASTM A490 Bolts are intended for used in structural connections similar to ASTM A325/A325M but being produced from alloy steel instead of medium carbon steel, possed high tensile strength. There were many changes made to the specification, but it is still not acceptable to manufacture fully threaded rods in the A325 or A490 specifications. The new F3125 specification states in section 4.1.3:
