A1 (M) is the designation given to a series of four separate motorway sections in the UK. Each section is an upgrade to a section of the A1, a major north–south road which connects London, the capital of England, with Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland.

A1 and A1(M) The A1 is the UK's longest numbered road and probably its most famous. The numbering system for A-roads, devised in the early 1920s, was based around patterns of roads radiating from two hubs at London and Edinburgh.

Two sections of A1 (M), bypassing Doncaster and Stevenage, were among the earliest motorways in the country, while the newest section is from Leeming to Barton via Scotch Corner, completed in 2018. The A1 (M) has continuous junction numbers, with space left for the unconstructed sections.

The A1(M) continues north until the A1 passes the Angel of the North overlooking the Northumbrian countryside. The road will be restricted to two lanes until it reaches its end in Edinburgh. As this road spans a great distance it’s important to check for any A1 traffic updates before you travel.

A1 is the official title of the Great Northern Road in England. It runs up the eastern side of England from London to Edinburgh in Scotland. It is six hundred and sixty kilometres long, making it the longest numbered road in the U.K.. The A1 has six major junctions with motorways, and over twenty major junctions with other A roads.
